Creamy, Peppermint-y Candy Cane Mocktail

It’s not Christmas without some candy canes! If you can’t find any candy canes in your area (there’s actually a shortage) why not make a delicious mocktail that will taste just as good? The best part is decorating! I used store-bought red icing that I found at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but you can make your own as well if you prefer. The actual red coloring isn’t as red as I would like, but it’s still good enough to make your holiday season festive. How you decorate your cup is up to you! I went with a simple circle on the inside of the glass, but you can try out diagonal stripes, horizontal stripes, and more. Just make sure to let the icing dry completely before you pour the cocktail. Otherwise, your drink will become more pink than white!

When it comes to the type of vanilla syrup, use whatever you have. You can even use vanilla extract, though that will make the drink a bit browner and leave a bit of a bitter aftertaste. The vanilla syrups are the best option and you can find them at a grocery store or a Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You’ll probably find these in the coffee section since most people use them to add a dash of flavor to their morning coffee.

You can use any peppermint or mint extract you like though I ended up getting one from Frontier as it stated it was non-alcoholic. Unfortunately, on the back it says it contains less than 0.5% alcohol, so while very low in alcohol, it’s not alcohol-free. It does give the drink a great flavor and smell. However, because it’s an oil-based liquid, it won’t incorporate well with drinks and you’ll see the little oil droplets on the top of your drink. Still, if you shake it well enough it should disperse evenly so you’ll get a nice mouthful of peppermint.
